The cortex system is a format that gives players the freedom to choose where to spend points. The game can be played using the 3 levels of characters or with all the skills, attributes, and advantages combined into one pool. The category of each die type is also randomly generated. However, the maximum for each die type is equal to its number of sides in each piece of the Cortex. For example, the maximum for a dice is a d6, but the maximum for a statistic is d3. If a player takes a statistic he must increase his die roll by the die type number.
Each area has four chapters and each area ends with a chapter on character advancement. There are three categories of advancement points in the system: advancement points, skills advancement points, and attribute advancement points. Attribute advancement points simply means that each point is spent on an attribute to increase the number of dice that can be rolled based on the attribute, except for disorder, which has variable dice based on the pros of the stat. Skills advancement points and attribute advancement points are made available. Here, each point is spent to increase the stat of the skill. For instance, a character begins with d2 of the skill “Stun”. Each point spent allows the player to roll a single 2 sided die.
