The theme song, \"Keep Your Eye on the Sparrow\", was written by Dave Grusin and Morgan Ames; initially an instrumental, lyrics were added in later seasons that were sung by Sammy Davis, Jr. Every episode of Baretta began with the song, which contained the motto, \"Don't do the crime if you can't do the time.\" According to Blake, studio executives did not want Davis's vocals for the theme song for fear that audiences would confuse Baretta for being a black series. Blake threatened to leave production if Davis's recording was rejected. His bosses relented.
Baretta started life as Toma in 1973, a series starring Tony Musante and based on the adventures of a real-life cop who used his wits and imaginative disguises. But Musante left after one season, leaving a show with reasonable ratings and nowhere to go.
Ferrara played with the Dodger rookies for two seasons, 1957 and 1958. The Dodgers also arranged a scholarship for him at Long Island University. His father wanted him to take the scholarship and go to school but Ferrara wanted to play and he signed with the now Los Angeles Dodgers, who sent him to Orlando of the then Class- D Florida State League in 1959.
Ferrara would finally get his chance to play regularly in 1967 and he made the most of it. He hit .277 with a .345 on-base percentage in 347 at-bats. He hit 16 homers and drove in 50 runs and appeared to have a very promising future in Los Angeles. That future, however, was dashed in 1968 when he broke his ankle two games into the season.
